When to Schedule Your Child’s First Dental Visit

THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY PREVENTIVE CARE

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children see a dentist by age 1. This early introduction to dental care helps children feel comfortable with dental visits from the start. Having good childhood experiences in the dental office also helps kids build lifelong positive associations with dental care, which can profoundly impact their oral health throughout their lives. Kids who don’t fear dental visits are more likely to maintain regular dental checkups and cleanings and practice good at-home oral hygiene.

Early dental visits are important to check the ongoing development of your child’s oral health. Our team will provide you with tips to help you care for your child’s teeth.

What Happens at the First Visit

WHAT KIDS AND ADULTS CAN EXPECT

First appointments will take around one hour for adults and 30 minutes for children. Regardless of the age of the patient, one of the most important things that our team does during first visits is a thorough oral health evaluation. We will then take a full set of digital X-rays to help us assess if you have any underlying dental issues. These digital X-rays are quick, easy, and comfortable and provide clear images on-screen immediately. Our team may also take lateral, panoramic, and cone-beam images to assist with our evaluation.

Your gums are just as important as your teeth, and for that reason, we also take periodontal readings at your first appointment. This involves gentle perio probing to fully assess your current gum health status.

If no periodontal issues are present, we will perform a professional dental cleaning. This is to remove hardened plaque and cavity-causing bacteria from hard-to-reach places that a toothbrush often misses.

The Next Steps

TREATMENT PLANNING

After a thorough evaluation, your dentist will present their findings so you know the current status of your oral health and any issues that need to be addressed. The dentist will have a conversation with you about your overall health and oral health goals, then recommend an appropriate treatment plan. Time for a financial consultation will also be available at the first appointment to discuss any treatment costs and estimated insurance coverage.
